1988 – Founders Day
In 1988 The Society held a “Founders Day” in the Richmond Hill Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Many of the early settlers of the Richmond Hill area are buried there including Abner Miles who passed away in 1806.
Celebrations included a service in the 1880 Presbyterian Church, laying of wreaths on the grave stones of some of the early settlers and refreshments in the adjacent Seniors Centre formerly the Richmond Hill Public School.
Contributions to local food bank
At our annual Christmas/Holiday Dinner every December, we encourage the Society members to bring either a non perishable food item or a cash donation to the Richmond Hill Food Bank. It is our way of sharing with the community.
Barn Raising Supper (Fundraiser)
The fundraiser was an initiative of one of our executive members creating a partnership with the York Central Hospital to raise funds towards part of the new wing of the hospital. The entire event took place at the home of Marion & David Hills near the Mill Pond in the historical section of Richmond Hill. The event had many aspects to it and the atmosphere was like a small afternoon fair on a particularly pretty sunny day. Wonderful food was served on the lawn near their old barn, a barber shop quartet sang to everyone, a brass band played on the front lawn under a beautiful old walnut tree. A silent auction was going on all during the festivities and was so successful that several thousands of dollars were raised as well as the tickets that were sold in advance for the event. We shared 50% of the profits to York Central Hospital from this initiative and gave a unique afternoon event that was enjoyed by everyone. Partnering in a fundraiser
