Annual General Meeting & Bring and Brag
Starting off the New Year with our Annual General Meeting. Reports will be presented and reviewed from 2011 on the different aspects of the year’s events and outcomes. Members have the opportunity to nominate new Executive Members if they wish and to vote in the new executive committee for the next year. Members are asked to contact the current President or Secretary with nominations prior to the meeting so that the nominations will be presented for voting. Guests are welcome to be involved in the annual process of forming the Executive Committee that is responsible for all of the committees and subcommittees that run our Society. Members must have current membership paid for the year of 2012 to vote. Please see membership details on Home Page. It is also the one time of the year where everyone is given the opportunity to bring in a beloved keepsake, heirloom or a mystery item! So Bring out those interesting objects & Brag about them!!
Following the meeting, refreshments will be served, providing a time of fellowship for the members and guests. Everyone welcome.
February 2012 Meeting
“200th Anniversary of The War of 1812″
Monday February 20th, 2012 – 7:30p.m.
Please join us to participate in one of three presentations we are offering this year, pertaining to the War of 1812, that our Society has arranged in order to emphasize the participation of Upper Canada during the War of 1812. Each program will be presented in a different manner illustrating certain people and events. To begin with:
In conjuction with the start of the 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812 between the United States and Britain here in Canada, members Dinah Cruse-Hunter and Greg Hunter will be introducing us to the War of 1812. They will be putting particular emphasis on the events mitigating its outbreak and on the significant events of the first year of that war. There will be an accompanying PowerPoint presentation and Greg and Dinah will dress in re-enactment regalia fitting to the period and topic. This will be the first of a three part presentation by Greg and Dinah during the ongoing celebrations of the Anniversary of the War of 1812. Part II is planned for February 2013 and Part III – February 2014, to further explain the two years following the war.
Don’t miss this presentation. Better understand the history and events leading to the War of 1812. Our next War of 1812 event will be April – To be posted.

March 2012 Meeting
“Heritage Trees – Preserving Our Natural Roots”
Monday March 19th, 2012- 7:30p.m.
Presented by: Edith George – Advisor to the Ontario Urban Forest Council.
A lone person can champion the protection of heritage trees and be successful. This is Edith’s personal legacy. Edith has taken her light-and-sound show on the road, sharing her enthusiasm and knowledge with all who are interested.

April 2012 Meeting
”Push On” – Some York Families in the War of 1812″
Monday April 16th, 2012 - 7:30 p.m.
Presented by: John Dale Warburton UE
John Warburton will present his side of things in the War of 1812, focusing on two heroes of York Region, bringing more local history of the war. Another part of the War of 1812.

May 2012 Meeting
“A Better Place” Death & Burial in the 19th Century
Monday May 21st 2012 – 7:30p.m.
Presented by: Susan Smart – York Region Branch – Ontario Genealogical Society
This talk will describe origins of funeral customs. In nineteenth Ontario and explain how they evolved through the century. Wakes, hearses, flowers and food, clothing, coffins and epitaphs will all be described.

June 2012 Meeting
June 18th 6:30 – 7:00 p.m. arrival time
Please join us for our annual Strawberry Social where we can relax and enjoy some good old fashioned strawberries, cake and ice cream. This year we will be joining in with the celebration of Queen elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee. Kevin Dark and Norman McMullen will present “Devoted to Your Service” : Celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Along with their presentation they will be sharing significant royal commemoratives, letters and other items of interest from the six decades of Elizabeth II ‘s reign from their personal collection. A wonderful evening for everyone to enjoy!
